Kids Back to School…
Hey everyone, it's Dr. Jeff from Kelowna Family Chiropractic.
Can you actually believe another summer is in the books? Most of us are in a mad panic to get our kids back in the school routine or in my case, get my boys shipped out to their teams for hockey season.
Families are gearing up for busy schedules, homework, after school activities and the hectic pace of our non-stop lifestyles.
To make sure that your child has a healthier, more successful year, it is important to have their spine aligned, balanced and on track.
Every activity your child goes through affects the spine and nervous system.
Contact sports, playing an instrument, sitting, studying, and paying attention in class are all important for a successful school year. They all require a healthy spine and nervous system.
When your child is sitting in class listening to a teacher, they listen through their ears, process the information in their brain, and a signal is sent down their spine and spinal cord to their fingers so that they can write their notes which they will later studyÂ… hopefully!
If a child is playing an instrument, the teacher tells them to sit up straight. They know that a healthy spine with good alignment and nerve supply is essential to performance.
When we watch our kids participating in sports, we often cringe at the intense beating their spine takes when they are hit by another player or twisted up during competition.
Keeping their spine and nervous system aligned and balanced is crucial for them to be able to enjoy a healthy and successful year and have a healthy spine for a lifetime.
Let me ask you a questionÂ… have you ever seen an older person with really poor posture that is super-healthy?
Posture and spinal alignment during childhood determine function and health as an adult.
Children make thousands of visits to the emergency room each year because of sports-related injuries. Every 2½ minutes a child is injured on a playground. These injuries are often accompanied by trauma to the child's developing spine and nervous system.
Most students carry school backpacks. Backpacks that are too heavy or worn incorrectly can injure your child's back, neck and shoulders, which can lead to other health problems.
A recent blog post by TIME Magazine titled "Your Kid's Gigantic Backpack is a Health Risk" discusses many of the risks associated with backpacks. Read the entire post by clicking this link or pasting it into your browser. http://time.com/4017521/your-kids-enormous-backpack/
Kids can injure their spine but remain symptom free until later on in life when the damage has caused premature degeneration of their spine. This can be avoided with regular chiropractic care.
British medical researchers have found through MRI technology that nearly 10% of children show signs of disc degeneration before reaching puberty! That is really important to recognize.
Disc degeneration is a condition in which a damaged spinal disc wears down unevenly causing nerve irritation and limiting activity levels, stamina, and quality of life as we age.
We tend to think of disc degeneration as a sign that we are getting older but this is not true. It is a sign that the spine has been injured in the past which can happen at any age.
Heavy backpacks, playground and sports injuries can cause non-structural or functional scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine that typically appears in early adolescence.
This type of scoliosis develops as a result of misalignment and pressure on the spine and nervous system. Functional scoliosis often can be corrected by addressing the underlying condition through chiropractic care.
As you complete your Back to School list remember to make an appointment for a "School's Back" Spinal Exam. This simple exam can determine if your child's spine is on track or off track.
